Ornamental Plants : Identification and Importants in English


Objectives :-


1. To know and identify the different trees planted for avenue, seasonal flowers, foliage and flowering shrubs, climbers, creepers, edge and hedge plants. 

2. To know the common names, local names and scientific names. 

3. To know their methods of propagation, colour and season of flowering in case of flowering plants. 

Some terms to know :-


1. Avenue tree : When trees are planted on both the sides of road in a symmetrical way, it is called avenue tree. 

2. Ornamental avenue tree : The tree planted in an avenue with ormamental value. 

3. Shady avenue trees : These are the trees which are planted in avenues mainly for shade purpose. 

4. Flowering avenue trees : There are the trees which are planted in avenues mainly for the beauty of the flowers. 

5. Annuals or seasonals : These plants complete their life cycle in one season or within one year. 

6. Biannuals : These plants require two seasons to complete their life cycle. 

7. Perennials : These plants require more than two seasons to complete their life cycle. 

8. Life cycle of plants : It is cycle from seed germination till the plant grows, flowers and forms seeds. 

9. Shrub : It is a plant, small to medium in growth and having multi-branched stem. 

10. Ornamental shrub : A shrub used as ornamental is called as ornamental shrub. 

11. Foliage shrub : It is shrub of which leaves of foliage is of ornamental value. 

12. Flowering shrub : It is shrub of which flowers are of omamental value.
 
13. Climber: A plant or a vine which require some support for growth. 

14. Creeper : It is a vine having natural organs like tendrils, jaws, etc. which are useful for creeping.

15. Foliage climber : A climber having ornamental foliage is called as foliage climber.

16. Flowering climber : A climber having flowers is called as flowering climber. 

17. Fragrant climber : A climber having scented flowers is called as Fragrant climber. 

18. Pergola, Arch : It is the dead support material on which climbers grow. 

19. Edge : The planting of ornamental plants on the borders in a row is called as an edge. 

20. Hedge : It is a row planting of ornamental plants in the borders of various garden features.
