RAISING AND TRANSPLANTING OF VEGETABLE AND SEASONAL FLOWERS SEEDLINGS (Part -1)

 OBJECTIVES
1) To know the necessity of preparing the nursery beds
2) To know the technique of raising seedlings and transplanting methods

Nursery
Nursery is a place where seedlings are raised from seeds under intensive care.

PRINCIPLES

To raise seedlings of vegetables and ornamental plants, they have to be sown in specially prepared area and the soils of nursery beds should have of fine texture. The soils should be well drained and given proper attention as regards sowing seeds, planting, cuttings, irrigation and plant protection upto certain period till they are removed for planting in permanent place. Such raised seedlings withstand transplanting shock. Another advantage of raising seedlings in nursery bed is small quantity of seeds is required to cover a unit area. It is convenient to look after young seedlings in nursery beds. It results into economy of space and management. Nurseries are prepared in sunny situation.

RAISING OF SEEDLINGS

EQUIPMENTS
Spade, measuring tape, pegs, baskets, water can, etc.

MATERIALS: Leaf mould, farm yard manure, seeds of vegetables and flower crops.

PRECAUTIONS: Prepare raised nursery beds to avoid drainage and disease problem. Mix nursery bed soils with fine FYM or leaf mould. Disinfect the soil before sowing. Treat the seeds with fungicides to protect them from seed born diseases. Sow the seeds in properly spaced furrows and proper depth. Press the soil firmly after sowing. Before sowing, there should be sufficient moisture in the soil. Cover the top of nursery bed after sowing with dry leaves to protect it against strong winds and strong sun.
PROCEDURE

1. Select the site at elevated area, near the water source and in open place.
2. Dig the nursery soil with the help of Kudali.
3. Loosen the soil with the help of spade.
4. Collect the weeds, stubbles, straw, etc.
5. Mix the compost 2 to 3 ghamelas per bed thoroughly in the soil.

7. Prepare the beds of standard size (2 m in length, 1 m in width and 20 cm in height).
8. Wet the surface of the bed by pouring water with the help of watering can.
9. Apply 10 to 20 g forate granules / lindane or folidol powder per bed.
10. Stir the soil after an hour

12. Make shallow furrows 3 to 5 cm deep width wise, 7-10 cm apart on the prepared beds
13. Drench the bed with suitable fungicides like Captan (2 g per liter of water) or 0.2 to 0.5 per cent copper fungicide to control the soil borne diseases.
14. Sow the selected seeds in rows
15. Cover the seeds with soil.
16. Press the soil by hand just to remove the air-space left if any.
17. Cover the top of beds with straw or dried grass so as to prevent displacement of seed by beating drops while watering or by rains.
